First, there was Tumblr, then Pinterest, and now TikTok—our current guide to fashion trends, aesthetics, and “cores.” Who knew short-form videos would dictate what’s in and what’s out? We are eating up the TikTok fashion trends—so much so that we’ve rounded up a few of our faves.

Here are our top six TikTok trends that aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

1. Cottagecore

Cottagecore is inspired by a romanticized rural aesthetic, characterized by flowy dresses, floral patterns, puff sleeves, Western boots, baskets, and vintage-inspired pieces. This TikTok trend encapsulates a serene and snug existence, embracing simplicity over technology, and the simple things like farm-fresh eggs and warm sourdough bread straight from the oven.

Think of Taylor Swift’s albums Folklore and Evermore, and that’s cottagecore at its finest. This aesthetic is for all the romantics out there, so if that lifestyle suits you, focus on neutrals, puff sleeves, eyelets in fabric, boots, and flowy dresses or skirts.

2. Coquette

Never in a million years did we think George Washington’s hairstyle would influence one of the biggest TikTok fashion trends, but here we are. If we’ve learned one thing this year, it’s that you need a hairbow in your life—that and some Maryjane ballet flats. The Coquette trend embodies a playful and flirtatious attitude, characterized by ribbons, lace, and pastel colors (think modern-day Bridgerton vibes).

To master the coquette look, simply channel your favorite princesses—or founding fathers—and dress as daintily as possible.

3. Coastal Grandma

Who coins these TikTok trends?! We give an A+ for the names. The “coastal grandma” became a trend in TikTok fashion back in 2022, but it’s as popular as ever today. This aesthetic is rooted in the idyllic lifestyle often associated with an older, wealthy woman residing by the sea (so pretty much any Nancy Meyers movie—we’re looking at you, Diane Keaton). It embodies the timeless elegance of classic New England fashion.

Whether it's embracing cozy striped knits during winter or opting for white denim and linen sets in the summer, the aesthetic remains relevant and fashionable this year.

Tip: Coastal blue is always a safe choice when channeling your inner coastal grandma.

4. Quiet Luxury

If you’re an anti-TikTok fashion kind of girl, this just might be the TikTok trend for you…stay with us. Quiet luxury is anything but trendy. It revolves around timeless, high-quality pieces with a minimalist flair. This aesthetic dismisses flashy colors and fleeting trends, favoring classic, neutral styles.

Wardrobe staples like trousers, cardigans, leather accessories, blazers, button-down shirts, and anything beige epitomize the essence of this non-trendy trend. Channel a French girl-next-door kind of vibe, and voila—you’re her.

5. Y2K Fashion

The ‘00s give pretty much the opposite of quiet luxury. This TikTok trend is loud and busy; it’s a revival of low-rise jeans, mini skirts, claw clips, and bold, colorful patterns. If you don’t want to lean into all of these throwbacks—like low-rise jeans—you can still incorporate pieces into your current wardrobe. Wear high-waisted jeans with a light wash or a neutral claw clip instead of a bright, colorful one. If you do want to lean into this TikTok fashion trend, the bigger and brighter the colors, the better.

6. The Coveted Birkenstock Boston Clog

Would you believe us if we said a suede clog gets its own category? But not just any clog—the Birkenstock Boston clog! Believe it or not, the Boston clog has been around since the 1970s but made a resurgence on TikTok in 2022. Selling out of almost every store, this was—and is—the “it girl” shoe.

If you think it looks more like a grandpa shoe, look to fashion icons like Bella Hadid and Mary-Kate Olsen, and you’ll change your mind. Regardless of your age or lifestyle, Birkenstocks are comfy, trendy, and fashionable.

Whether bright summer colors are some of your favorites or you’re looking to experiment with your summer fashion, summer is the season for fun prints, breezy, breathable textures, and pretty pops of color.

Wondering what to wear in the summer? We’ve got you covered!

The Traditional Summer Color Palette

There are a few summer colors that come back time and time again, like yellows, pinks, corals, lighter purples (like lavender or lilac), and all sorts of different blue hues. From summer fashion to summer shoes, accessories, accents, and swimwear, you can’t go wrong by mixing and matching these classic summer colors

Color Analysis: The Summer Color Palette

Believe it or not, summer is a bit more subtle, soft, and cool than you might expect. Think pastels and shades of gray, usually. Summers tend to have low contrast between their skin tone and hair color, but there are exceptions to that “rule”! If you’re dressing for your color season, be sure you use the right shades around your face to best highlight your features.

Trending Summer Colors: 2024 Edition

The following are today’s trendiest colors for summer 2024:

  • Glacial blue
  • Lilac (and lavender)
  • Pistachio
  • Red
  • Yellow
  • Navy Blue
  • Orangeade
  • Gold

Not a lot of surprises there, but you can expect to see these summer colors everywhere here soon … from patterns and prints to solids and statement pieces. You might even see them in home decor (indoor and outdoor), linens, kitchenware, and more.

How to Add Summer Colors to Your Rotation

No matter which summer colors we’re talking about, the guidelines for adding more color to your closet remain the same. The concoction for wearing color includes one part confidence, two parts want and will, and one part commitment. But, that all comes once you warm up to the idea of color and get comfortable with it.

Here are a few of our tips for speeding up that process.

Start One Piece (or Even One Color) at a Time!

Diving headfirst into the Skittles Rainbow of summer colors is not for the faint of heart. If you have a favorite style or color, it’s best to start there. After all, you already feel positive feelings about it!

Alternatively, you can add a pop of color to a favorite outfit somehow, whether it’s with shoes, accessories, or a bigger piece of the puzzle. Adding a neutral layer (a jacket or sweater) lets a color do what it needs to without it feeling in your face. Once you’re used to that, you can play with monochrome, tonal, complementary, and mixed-and-matched color structures.

And it’ll be so much fun!

Play With Shades

If you’re totally new to summer colors, soft shades might feel more diluted, neutral, and doable than their bright and bold counterparts.

Consider the color analysis categories: summer is something of a muted winter and autumn is something of a muted spring. Many find the muted seasons more palatable, especially in the beginning, and there’s nothing wrong with that! It’s all about finding whatever works for you.

Wondering What to Wear in the Summer? Color!

As summer swims in, embracing a bit of color, be it trendy or timeless, is totally in season. Whether you opt for bold statement pieces or subtle accents, incorporating summer colors will effortlessly improve your summer style and match the mood warmer weather brings in.

Chances are you likely either learned from parental figures or clothing care labels, perhaps a one-off search query when you’re taking care of something special or a new fabric. Or, maybe you’re a dry clean only, leave it to the professional type of person!

Whatever your laundry habits are now, we hope this summer clothing care guide can help you keep your favorite pieces in pristine condition for seasons to come. After all, laundry is one of those enigmas that takes effort and education to truly master.

From brights to linens to swimsuits and accessories, we’re going to share our best tips and tricks that teach how to wash clothes without shrinking and more with all your summer staples in mind.

Clothing Care Quick Tips (Washing and Drying 101)

It’s important to get to know your tools if you want to give your clothes the TLC they deserve. While washers and dryers add more bells and whistles, we’re taking it back to basics.

To start, sort your clothes into loads by color and fabric type. If you aren’t sure, refer to the clothing care labels as you sort. Next let’s talk about the washing cycle and its three components: temperature, soil, and spin.

Hot Water:

According to The Spruce, hot water is best for whites and household linens. Hot water tends to make some fabrics shrink, wrinkle, and fade. The dyed fabric might turn out splotchy after using hot water. And delicate fabrics don't usually respond well to high temperatures.

Warm Water:

Most clothing, regardless of color or fabric, can be washed in warm water. “Warm” simply means a split between hot and cold water and the proportion varies by the washer. The Spruce suggests warm water is the best for permanent press materials and jeans. It allows good cleaning action without as much fading, wrinkling, and shrinking.

Cold Water:

Cold water is for delicates, denim, and deep or vivid colors that might be prone to running or fading. Keep a keen eye on your soil levels because cold water clothes can require closer care for a complete clean.

Soil Levels:

The soil setting on a washing machine is straightforward. It refers to the overall dirtiness of the load. Your selection will adjust the wash time as well as the detergent usage in some models. For clothes with average wear between cycles, the normal setting will do and you can adjust accordingly.

Spin:

The spin cycle is also fairly straightforward: A higher spin speed reduces the amount of water your clothes will retain, meaning they will take less time to dry. Lower spin speeds result in less wrinkling, tangling, and damage to the fabric, making it perfect for delicates.

Drying:

The second part of learning how to wash clothes without shrinking is knowing how to properly dry them. Overdrying or using a heat higher than the article requires are the two fastest ways to cause a garment to shrink.

Air drying is easier on fabrics, eliminates static, doesn’t lock in stains, and, according to USA Today, is the way to avoid shrinking clothes. Be mindful of humidity and sunlight regardless of if you air dry your clothes indoors or out to manage fading and aroma.

Using a dryer is quick, reliable, and effective. Dryers can prevent wrinkles and are easy on an active lifestyle since you just have to toss a load in, start the cycle, and fold it upon completion.

Summer Clothing Care How-Tos

Now, let’s take what we just learned and apply it to some summer staples.

How to Wash Linen Clothes

Check your linen clothing’s care tag and make sure it doesn’t say hand wash or dry clean only before continuing. Now, avoid washing them in water that’s too hot or too cold. Warm or cool cycles are likely your best bet, always with gentle detergent and on a delicate or gentle cycle. Air, line, or tumble dry on low. This finicky fabric is one you should take care to use low temperatures with because using too high of a heat setting will cause damage or shrinking.

How to Wash A Swimsuit

Use cold-to-room-temperature water and mild detergent to wash your favorite swims. We’d recommend turning them inside out before washing, but the delicate cycle on a machine or handwashing them in the sink will work just fine. After, wring out the water and hang or lay the swimsuit flat to dry.

How to Wash Hats

Handwashing hats is advisable, but they can be put in a washing machine in cold water on a delicate or gentle cycle if you’re in a pinch. The key here is to pretreat areas that contact your skin, allow the hat to soak, thoroughly rinse, then reshape the hat and let it air dry. If you wear a hat regularly, you should wash it regularly to get rid of any stains or smells.

Think of it this way: if you use a hat to cover unwashed and dirty hair, it will accumulate dirt, sweat, and grime sooner rather than later and deserves the same attention that you give your hair. Otherwise, things will get all sorts of gross!

How to Wash Sandals

Gently scrub your sandals with a soft toothbrush with a solution of mild laundry detergent or dish soap and water. Then, let your sandals soak in the laundry soap water solution, rinse them, and let them air dry. If you really need to use a machine for speed, use the delicate setting with cold water and just a touch of detergent and add one cup of white vinegar directly into the machine.

If you want to prevent unwanted smells, add a layer of baking soda to the sole and let them sit for a few hours. We tend to leave them outside or in the garage while the baking soda does its thing, but anywhere out of the way will do.

Keep Your Called to Surf Summer Clothes in Tip-Top Shape

There’s nothing worse than having to replace an old favorite when it unravels, shrinks, stains, or just gets ruined, especially when it could’ve been prevented by proper clothing care and laundry habits. So, whether your favorite pieces in your closet are old or new, start giving them the TLC they deserve with these tips. And if you’re looking for a wardrobe refresh, start your search at Called to Surf

Although the cooler tones and seasons are great, there’s a special place in our hearts for the summer color palette. Some colors are popular for a season and then it feels like we never see them again. That’s why we want to make the most of them now! Regardless of sleeve shape, dress length, or ruffle design, we see the same colors enter stores every June. Let’s take a moment to celebrate them! Without further ado, here are the most popular summer dress colors.

1. White

Summer is wedding season, but those aren’t the kind of white dresses we’re talking about. White is a light, classic color perfect for vacations and day dresses. Because white is such a simple color, a lot of white dresses have extra texture or embellishments to keep things interesting. It’s also a very versatile color, so you’re set for most events. Check out the new white dress designs Called to Surf has released this summer here.

2. Sand or Khaki

We love a good neutral, and khaki is no exception. This color tends to look good on most people, and it’s a great addition to the soft summer color palette because it balances out bolder shades. Khaki has been especially popular in recent years with the rise of minimalism, and you can see it now in interior design and art as well as dresses. While we wouldn’t recommend making your entire wardrobe this color, it’s the perfect neutral to add to your dress collection this summer.

3. Baby Blue

Baby blue is another staple in the soft summer color palette. So many summer colors are warm and bright; baby blue is different because it’s cooler and muted. That doesn’t make it any less beautiful though. This shade ends up being a fashion favorite every year! It combines simplicity and elegance with fun to create something hard to dislike. If you don’t have enough baby blue in your closet, this is the sign you’ve been waiting for to add a dress you can wear and enjoy for years to come!

4. Coral Pink

Now it’s time to talk about the first bright color on the list. Coral pink is such a fun summer dress color! You’ll never feel bored or underwhelmed when you’re wearing a coral-pink dress. Coral comes back every year because it has a unique way of making you feel confident and girly without being too extra. Our coral dresses are perfect for a casual night out, a wedding guest dress, and other happy occasions! You can see them here.

5. Palm Green

Green is an interesting color because it’s always in season. Different shades of green are popular during different seasons, but it’s always present in fashion. Palm green is one of the prettiest shades, and it also happens to play an important role in the summer color palette. Green is cool, so pairing it with warmer colors is a great way to even out your outfit. In fact, many green dresses are floral for that reason. Whether you pair it with other colors or not, a palm green dress is a must-have this summer.

6. Sunset Orange

Do you think orange is a controversial color? Whatever your preference is, no one can deny that it makes a statement! Sunset orange is a softer, girlier way to add it to your outfit. Confidence is the name of the game with sunset orange, and it matches best with a smile! Because it’s such a powerful color, many sunset-orange dresses will either feature a simpler design or incorporate it in smaller amounts. Don’t let it scare you! With the right design, you will be a showstopper in this bold shade.

7. Cerulean Blue

Even though we already have a shade of blue on the list, it would be a crime to leave out the token color of summer beaches and cloudless skies! Cerulean is the exact color that comes up when you think of fair weather, so obviously, it stays in style during the summer. While not exactly neutral, cerulean works with most colors (especially the other ones in the summer color palette). No matter who you are, you need a cerulean dress to wear this summer.

https://tridentseal.com/blogs/cts-blog/tips-for-choosing-a-swimsuit-that-makes-you-feel-confident-and-comfortable 2024-04-09T13:00:00-06:00 2024-07-30T08:41:33-06:00 Tips for Choosing a Swimsuit That Makes You Feel Confident and Comfortable Arvo Digital We all know that sorting through the swimsuit styles to find the perfect one for you can be a daunting task. We want something comfortable and flattering. Something we don’t have to worry about. Something we can just have fun in the sun in.

So, if you find yourself asking, “What’s the best swimsuit for my body type?” we’re here to help.

Let’s dive in!

Best Swim Styles for Pear Shapes

For our pear-shaped beauties, you’re going to want to look for cuts that balance your proportions while providing ample coverage for your lower half. That makes two-piece swims your best friend! Cut-out tops or upper-body detailing can naturally draw people’s eyes upward (if that’s what you’re after). A high-waisted swimsuit is a safe option for all body types, especially our pears.

Best Swim Styles for Athletic, Straight, or Rectangular Shapes

Since you may not have God-given curves naturally, the goal with your straight-bodied swimwear is to play up the idea of curves. Cutouts around the middle, high legs, mid-length tops, skinny straps, stripes, prints, and little detailing can all add to the overall shape you’re going for. These flattering swimsuits should be similar on top and bottom so that visually, the illusion is symmetrical. One-piece swims are also good for athletic builds. Shop tridentseal to find the best swimsuit for rectangular-built beauts.

Best Swim Styles for Apple Shapes

A good, two-piece high-waisted flattering swimsuit is best for our apple-shaped besties. Most people with this body type want to keep attention away from their midsection, which can be done with strategic ruching, deep v-necks, high-waisted bottoms, and color-blocking prints. Mixing and matching different prints and styles are safe bets for our curvier ladies; we think it’s best if the colors are bright and the patterns are bold just for that extra splash. Plus, it’s summer—go big or go home!

Best Swim Styles for Hourglass Shapes

Flaunt what you’ve got, girl! Women of all body types often seek the hourglass illusion and it’s usually achieved through high-waisted comfortable swimsuits or one-pieces with cutouts and flattering prints. We’re a big fan of color-blocking this season, and we think it’s a great style choice for our hourglass-shaped women.

You should also keep your eye out for tie detailing, ruching on the bottoms, peplum styles, etc. The mix-and-match style is fun, but sometimes it can throw off that natural balance that hourglass body types possess, so we think it’s best to stick to matching sets when searching for flattering swimsuits.

What About Swim Styles for Support?

When it comes to busty or not-so-busty women, finding a supportive swimsuit can be even harder. It doesn’t matter so much about style but construction.

Bustier gals probably want a comfortable swimsuit with some padding (which can be a headache, we know!) or at least some underwire and perhaps a thicker strap while we’re at it. Our beloved members of the smaller-chested club can go with strapless or spaghetti-style straps, so long as they tie tight and fit right.

Think of swimwear like workout gear (because it is)! You want to feel secure and covered so you can splish, splash, and stick your toes in the sand without worrying about any sort of wardrobe malfunction, no matter how big or small. These lovely ladies should look out for comfortable swimsuits, but don’t be mistaken; comfort can be quite cute.

Swim Upkeep: tridentseal Tips

Whether you’re in the market for a flattering swimsuit that may not take any dips in the pool or will live in the water all season long, you need a high-quality swim. That means good fabrics that will hold up through the season (A+ if it can hold up for a few years!), but it also means taking care of your suit properly so it doesn’t start to sag, droop, pill, or tear.

The short of it: Rinse or soak your swimsuit ASAP after wearing it in water. It’s possible to wash swimwear in the machine, but it’s better if you have the time to hand wash it with a spandex-specific mild detergent. If you must machine-wash it, put the suit in a mesh garment bag, use the delicate cycle and cold water, and hang it to dry. Take time to give your swimsuit the TLC it needs to stay perfect all summer.

Confidence Comes When You’re Comfortable

Easier said than done, right? We hear it everywhere that we should love the skin we’re in and embrace our bodies because we only get one, etc. All true! In our experience, the quickest way to build confidence is by feeling comfortable. If we feel our best, we’ll look our best, no doubt about it.

So, shop for comfortable, flattering swimsuits at tridentseal so you can hit the pool in style (and don’t forget the SPF!).

Raise your hand if you’ve ever stared at your overflowing closet and thought, “I have nothing to wear!” Yep—we’ve all been there. Putting your perfect look together can be challenging when all you see is clutter. Closet organization is key to maintaining a functional, stylish wardrobe. Today, we’re on a mission to help you organize and declutter your closet so that the outfit inspo will come pouring back in. You can do this.

We’ll offer eight practical closet organization tips to help you maximize space, streamline your wardrobe, and enjoy getting ready for the day again!

1. Assess Your Wardrobe

Be honest with yourself. If you haven’t worn it in over a year, it’s time to say buh-bye. This is where the concept of a capsule wardrobe can come in handy: the essentials. Evaluate your closet and choose which items you need. Assessing your lifestyle and personal style will help you with this step. Are you in an office setting every day? Do you work out regularly? Did you buy that sweater just because an influencer said it was trendy and you don’t actually like it? You get the picture. Decide what’s “you” and decide what’s out during the necessary closet cleanout.

2. Declutter, Declutter, Declutter

Once you’ve assessed your closet, it’s time to put your Marie Kondo cap on and implement the KonMari method. You're ready to part ways if an item doesn’t spark joy! You can simplify your closet cleanout by sorting clothing into categories (keep, donate, toss). Be ruthless in your decision-making! If you talk yourself into starting a “maybe” pile, you likely don’t need those items.

3. Find Simple Closet Storage Ideas

Now comes the fun part! You should have a blank canvas at this point: clothes in a “donate/toss” pile and clothes in a “keep” pile. Before randomly shoving your keepers back into the closet,  think about different closet storage ideas such as bins, baskets, shelves, and hangers to optimize space. Because closet organization is a hot fad right now, you’ll find plenty of cute, affordable storage containers. Whether you’re a wicker gal or prefer clear, plastic bins for functionality, there’s something for everyone. Just measure your closet and choose containers that fit the dimensions.

4. Utilize Drawer Dividers

Along those same lines, consider using drawer dividers! You can keep smaller items like socks, underwear, and accessories organized with the help of drawer dividers. Remember to separate items into designated compartments to prevent clutter and make items easier to find. We’re loving these expandable drawer dividers right now.

5. Maximize Vertical Space

Don’t underestimate the power of a good, over-the-door organizer. And no, they’re not just for dorm rooms! Hanging organizers are perfect for storing shoes, bags, and folded clothing. You can also use hooks for belts or scarves. Vertical space is just as important as horizontal space, so maximize it!

6. Rotate Seasonal Items

Next closet organization tip: Store out-of-season clothing and accessories in bins or garment bags to free up space in your closet. Rotate items seasonally to keep your closet clutter-free and relevant to the current weather. If it’s summer, there’s no need for bulky sweaters and puffers (and vice versa), so put them out of sight. You can store these bins or bags under your bed or in a storage room.

7. Organize by Category and Color

Now that you have your in-season, must-have pieces laid out, you can organize them by category and color. Group similar items together (e.g., tops, bottoms, dresses) to make it easier to find what you need. Arrange your clothing by color within each category for a visually pleasing and organized closet.

When it comes to hanging and folding, assess the fabric:

  • Hang silks, linens, and satins—especially your flowy dresses and skirts.
  • Hang tailored formal and office wear—think suits and structured jackets.
  • Fold cashmere, wool, and knit—hanging will stretch out the necks of your favorite knits.
  • Fold everyday cotton T-shirts and denim—these durable, thick fabrics are happiest when folded neatly.

8. Do a Closet Refresh with Called to Surf!

https://tridentseal.com/blogs/cts-blog/color-psychology-in-fashion 2024-03-29T10:42:28-06:00 2024-07-30T09:04:57-06:00 Color Psychology in Fashion Arvo Digital

What you choose to wear is like your own personal language, speaking volumes without saying a word—especially when it comes to color. Think about it: The colors we wear aren't just random; they reflect who we are and how we want to show up in the world. When we pick out our outfits each day, we're not just getting dressed; we're crafting our identity, setting the tone for how we want to feel and how we want others to perceive us. It's like painting a picture of ourselves with every hue and shade, making color the ultimate MVP in our fashion game.

Too deep? Well, that’s fashion psychology for you. Buckle up because we’re about to dive even deeper into what color in fashion signifies.

A Color Analysis

Here’s a little color psychology cheat sheet to kickstart your wardrobe journey:

Color Psychology and Confidence cheat sheet.

Red

First up, we've got our girl RED. This fiery hue isn't just about making a bold statement but also about confidence and passion. There’s a reason a red lip or red dress always turns heads. Red radiates power and energy (just ask Taylor Swift—she titled an entire album Red). So, when you're ready to unlock your bold side, slip into something red. Whether you're making a grand entrance in a room (or on a Zoom call!), going on a first date, or trying to emulate Miss Swift herself, red is your go-to color for making a statement.

Get ready in red.

Yellow

Not only do we naturally associate yellow with eye-catching street signs and markings, but we link this color with the sun, too. This sunny shade is like a little slice of happiness you can wear. It's all about positivity, optimism, and just embracing life with open arms. If you’re a generally happy person (or trying to be), wearing yellow can signify your cheery attitude! Yellow works best in the spring and summer. Pull out a yellow sundress and you’ll be spreading good vibes and frolicking through fields in no time—that’s what wearing yellow can do to a gal.

Spruce up your wardrobe with sunny yellow.

Blue

Now, let’s talk about blue color psychology—the color of tranquility, calm, and sadness (but we’re not focusing on that last one today). We see blue in the ocean and the sky, two constants in our world. Because of this, wearing blue can convey loyalty and steadfastness, instilling calmness in both yourself and those around you. Blue also just gives off a chill, approachable vibe. Opt for a pair of blue jeans and a baby blue top when you want to channel those calm vibes and keep it cool and collected.

Beat the winter blues by wearing the color.

Green

Up next: green color psychology. Green symbolizes growth, harmony, and all things nature-inspired. It’s like a breath of fresh air in your wardrobe. We suggest wearing green when springtime rolls around to feel renewed and grounded. You’ll feel like you’re one with Mother Earth. Plus, it’s a safe color that pairs well with every skin complexion and eye combination.

Go green.

Pink

Pink is the ultimate symbol of femininity and romance. Next to diamonds, pink is the closest thing to a girl’s best friend. It’s also linked with softness and compassion. Note that you don’t necessarily have to be a total girly girl to wear pink. Whether you’re rocking a soft pastel pink or a bold fuchsia, pull out your pinks for romantic occasions or special celebrations with loved ones. And don’t forget Valentine’s Day—pink was made for February 14th.

Shop from plenty of pink picks!

Purple

Last but not least in today’s fashion psychology lesson is purple—the color of royalty, luxury, and sophistication. Purple boasts a rich lineage tied to royalty and affluence, stemming from its once-exclusive production using a rare sea snail shell found solely in what is now Lebanon. Now, it retains its allure, symbolizing intrigue and mystery. Wear purple when you're craving a sense of individuality and distinction. Similar to red, this hue ensures you'll turn heads and command attention.

Wear purple like the royal queen you are.

What’s your favorite thing in your closet? Why is it your favorite? Is it because it has sentimental value, is your favorite color, or makes you feel good?

If you don’t have something come to mind, maybe it’s time to try and find something new to refresh your selection. After all, it’s easy to get stuck with certain styles and prioritize function over fashion and fun, but the beauty of clothing is that it has this unique ability to make us feel both our best and our worst depending on the day. Wearing the right thing can be a confidence boost just like wearing the wrong thing can dull the day.

According to Vogue, “It’s no secret that assembling an outfit is like selecting social armor, and that what we wear has power over others.” So, if confidence and self-image are top of mind, consider the clothes you wear as you start your style journey.

If you’re on a quest to look and feel your best, we’re right there with you. Today we’ll talk numbers, color, fit, formality, shape, and more as we explore how clothing affects confidence. With some TLC, we can unlock the best versions of ourselves through our closets. How cool is that?

Color Psychology and Confidence

Color analyses and personal palettes became really trendy on social media recently—and it’s a fun area to explore if you haven’t yet! As such, Insider spoke with a color psychology expert and shared this about colors and the emotions they evoke:

  • Red: Can give you energy when you're feeling exhausted or need an extra kick for a long day
  • Orange: Can keep the body calm and balanced
  • Yellow: Can make you feel happier
  • Green: “Has the power to evoke numerous feelings in the body” which can calm you or perk you up
  • Blue: The “psychological primary color of the mind,” with lighter shades having calming effects and deeper hues promoting stillness and relaxation
  • Purple: Most often associated with spirituality and connection
  • Pinks: Can inspire comfort and softness, but magenta is the color of revolution and helps spark action

An article published by Columbia University reports that the black color is mostly associated with these words and phrases: “powerful, mysterious, serious, and intelligent, commands respect, and represents dignity and elegance.” On the flip side, “White is neutral not only in technical terms of color theory but also in the psychological context. Wearing white never puts anybody off and its inviting nature is embraced by all. White almost universally represents purity and is associated with cleanliness, simplicity, and optimism.”

Back to color analyses. Knowing your season or palette can be instrumental in crafting your closet for confidence. Once you see how certain colors can perk you up and others dull your sparkle, you can have so much fun with fashion. It can be hard to separate colors and shades you like from what looks good on you, but who says you can’t bend the “rules” if a color outside your palette brings you confidence?

Body Confidence and Clothing

Two girls walking across a field while wearing Called to Surf dresses

In this Forbes article, health coaches and body confidence experts joined to share how to up your self-esteem in this area. The article tells us to think of positive body image as a practice rather than a destination. "It’s not a state to be perfected, it’s a daily practice of self-acceptance," said Jessi Barnes, body image coach.

Another article published by Northern Arizona University shared seven body-positive shopping tips:

  • Do your shopping when you are in a good mood
  • Buy clothes that fit you now (if it doesn’t fit JUST RIGHT, don’t buy it)
  • Make it fun
  • Don’t be afraid to send it back (thank goodness for return policies!)
  • Only buy outfits you feel confident in
  • Use positive affirmations
  • Shop at body-positive stores

And don’t be deterred if you aren’t finding anything you like or anything that fits right. That might just mean you need new places to look.

How Clothing Type Affects Confidence

While our comfiest clothes might feel great, it’s a different type of “feeling great” than something that just exudes confidence. This study asked some subjects to wear casual clothing and some to wear formal clothing before a series of intellectual tests, and wouldn’t you know, those wearing more formalwear did better, suggesting a correlation between clothing and cognitive performance.

So, if you’re ever feeling down, put on your “power suit!” (Note: It doesn’t have to be a power suit if that’s not what makes you feel powerful and confident.)

Body Shape and Confidence

Forget the fruit metaphors—we’re more partial to the Kibbe body type system. David Kibbe, trained in the 1980s era of beauty, created the system as “a corrective to what he called “fear-based” style advice that told women they needed to minimize their features.” It’s more exhaustive, comprising 13 body types on a scale of angular/sharp to soft/round. And, it embraces the fact that all bodies are beautiful. If you’re looking to self-educate in this area, the Kibbe system is where we’d recommend you start, but remember that “rules” are meant to be broken and if you love something and it makes you feel great, don’t toss it just because someone online “told” you to.

The wedding industry is one of the most obvious places we see changing fashions and trends. Weddings change over the years with different colors, clothes, and foods depending on the couple’s taste and what’s in style.

Availability is one reason for the changing trends. Once companies determine what is going to be most popular during the year, they tend to carry way more of that than anything else. Many soon-to-be newlyweds just go with something already in stock rather than wait for a more unique option. This doesn’t mean the couple won’t like their wedding, just that the trends decide what most weddings will look like.

If you’re planning a wedding, it’s important to find out what’s in style so you know what choices you have. We’re here to help with that! Here is an overview of all the upcoming wedding trends for 2023.

Wedding Dresses

Bride wearing reception dress and groom leaving their reception with a sparkler tunnel

The bride’s dress is such a classic part of every wedding that sometimes it’s hard to recognize the changing styles. However, a couple of fun trends are coming your way in 2023.

First is sheer fabrics. The light, flowy nature of fabric you can see through is a big aesthetic that brides are starting to want. This is a nice trend because it works with modest wedding dresses too. It is possible to layer sheer fabrics over a basic dress design to add texture, character, or embellishment.

Reception and getaway dresses are also going to be big in the new year. By the time the ceremony is over, most brides are ready to party! It can be hard to do that with long, expensive gowns, so brides are compromising. Buying a shorter dress is a great way to change up the vibe on your wedding day, and it makes dancing the night away that much more enticing. These dresses can be any style, and we’re so excited to see the outfit changes in 2023.

Wedding Colors

From the time we’re little girls, we wonder what our wedding will look like. Once you’re finally ready to plan it, one of the first things you have to choose is the colors you’ll base your decor and theme on.

Luckily, some gorgeous colors are coming back just in time for your 2023 fantasy wedding. Bohemian, richer colors are going to be super popular, including forest green, rose, navy blue, and rust. For those brides who are looking for a lighter aesthetic, dusty blue and dusty pink are universally beautiful.

It’s important to choose colors that best fit you. However, these colors will be the easiest to find, so it will make the process easier to incorporate a few of them.

Bridesmaid Dresses

Bridesmaids pose with their flowers in their mismatched bridesmaid dresses

Historically, bridesmaids' dresses have been a matching set made to contrast the bride in white. That may not be the case this next year! One trend set to boom in 2023 is mismatched bridesmaid dresses. Why have everyone wear one color when you can have each bridesmaid wear the dress that fits her coloring the best and represent all your wedding colors?

Comfort is also a big factor in choosing formal gowns for your bridesmaids, which is why silk/satin dresses are going to be so popular next year. It’s super easy to find satin dresses in any color you need, and the comfortable fabric will keep your girls feeling amazing, regardless of the season or venue. Silk and satin are also great fabrics for modest bridesmaid dresses if that’s something you care about. These dresses are also super classy, so after your wedding, your friends will have elegant dresses for special occasions. Making sure your bridesmaids feel amazing is going to be a priority in 2023, and we are here for it.

Bachelorette Parties

We’re crazy about the new and big ideas coming up for bachelorette parties, including trying to celebrate more sustainably. That’s right! This next year, the trend for bachelorette parties will be DIY and chic. Maids of honor everywhere are ditching expensive trips and choosing to focus on quality time and connection before the wedding with the bride instead.

Included in this is another trend we’re going to see in 2023: bridal party gifts. It’s been the tradition for a long time to give your bridal party something special to say thank you for being a part of your day, but this is becoming even bigger with customizable items for individual girls and sometimes even DIY gift baskets. One of the more popular gifts to give your maid of honor and bridesmaids is jewelry. But regardless of what you provide, having supportive bridesmaids is not going out of style.

Styling for Spring Family Photos

Girl, boy, and dog posing for family photos in an orchard

The grass is green and the flowers are blooming, and it's the perfect time to capture stunning and picturesque spring family photos. Skip the indoor studio portraits because weather and blooms make spring a picturesque backdrop for family photos. Glow on and embrace the sun and all of its natural lighting. Most spring portraits are edited to be light and airy. If you’re more of a dark and moody type of girl, find a photographer that will deliver that vibe. Styling for family photos can start as soon as you nail down your location.

Colors/Outfits

If you’re reading this, you’re the one taking charge of leading family photo efforts. Choose your outfit first! Let’s take care of styling the littles and your partner after we’re done styling you. For a spring family photo, opt for a super subtle floral dress. Something flowy and ethereal can help you feel like your most confident self.

Maybe you’re Miranda Priestly-ing us and thinking “Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.”

Understandable. In that case, here are a few other spring inspired colors and patterns:

    • Gingham: This pattern is a reminder of spring picnic and will have you feeling like a tall glass of lemonade.
    • Soft pastels: Soft pastels like light pink, lavender, mint green, and baby blue are perfect for creating a light and airy feel for spring photos.
    • Polka dots: Polka dots are a playful and fun pattern that can add some whimsy to your spring photos.

Once you have your dress, everyone else can follow suit. Start by choosing a soft pastel or earthy neutral color palette, incorporating shades of lilac, rose, sage green, lemon yellow, and soft lavender.

Poses

Pose couples close together, capturing their love through tender gazes or sweet kisses, while children and siblings can express their connection and joy through laughter, play, and hugs. Don't forget to include any cherished family pets in the mix to showcase the bond between the entire family.

Photo Style/Background

Be sure to either tell your photographer what you’re looking for. Or, find a photographer whose style matches your desires. For spring photos you may want to consider creating a light and airy visual language with natural light, lens flares, and soft-focus backgrounds, highlighting the ethereal beauty of the blooming flowers, flowing fabrics, and gentle movement of the season.

Consider taking your photos with backgrounds that evoke the season:

    • Flower fields: Spring is the season of blooming flowers, and a flower field can be a beautiful and colorful background for your photos.
    • Parks and gardens: Public parks and gardens can provide a scenic background with lush greenery, blooming flowers, and winding paths.
    • Nature trails: If you're looking for a more rustic and natural background, a nature trail can provide a scenic backdrop with trees, rocks, and streams.

With these tips, your spring family photos will evoke a sense of joy, renewal, and togetherness that can be shared and cherished for years to come

Styling for Summer Family Photos

Mom, dad, daughter, and two sons taking a family photo in a field during golden hour

Suns out, cameras out. Summer is an underrated time to take your family photos. Chances are your kids are out of school and they don’t have as many sports practices or homework assignments to get to.

But, don’t wait until the peak of summer to take family photos, especially if you’re planning to shoot outdoors. Everyone, from newborns to grandparents, is grumpier when they’re sweating through a photo session.

Colors/Outfits

As we manifest smiles and picture-perfect photos for you and your family, let’s get to styling your outfits for family photos in the summertime. You can stick with the same process of getting your outfit ready first and going from there. If you’re planning on doing larger family photos with extended families in the summer, that’s when you may need to adjust your method. With so many bodies and opinions to think about, consider asking the pickiest person in the entire group to get things started. Have them select an outfit, pattern, or color scheme that they love and plan around that. Then, you won’t have to hear them complain about it later.

Here are a few summery ideas to get you started:

    • Bright and bold colors: Vibrant colors such as hot pink, coral, turquoise, and orange can make your photos stand out and add a pop of color.
    • Stripes: Striped patterns are perfect for summertime photos, and they can create a fun and playful vibe.
    • Neutral colors: If you prefer a more subtle and classic look, you can opt for neutral colors such as beige, champagne, and gray. They can create a timeless and elegant look for your photos.
    • 50 shades of blue is a summer go-to color palette: Whether it’s the royal blues or navy blues, they make us feel like we’re cruising on a beach in Hawai’i and ring in the summer vibes.

Color Note: Summer is also one of the few seasons where bolder colors can make sense for smaller families. Tread carefully with bright colors, though. Even a typically neutral color like a bright white can wash out complexions. This is why you’ll see more families wearing creams and champagnes instead. Super bright colors can sometimes be distracting in a photo, too. If orange is your favorite color, you can always swap it out for a muted version like rust orange—problem solved.

Poses

Three women laughing next to each other on a sunny beach.

Pose couples in a relaxed manner, perhaps with arms around each other's waist or shoulders, capturing the warmth and connection of the summer season. Children and sibling poses can highlight fun summer activities like playing beach volleyball or sharing a cold treat on a hot day. Pets can be photographed frolicking in the shallow tide, running through meadows, or lounging with their family in the sunshine.

And, you didn’t invest all that money in a cute photographer just to get teens or your husband eye-rolling in photos. Unfortunately, a few eye rolls and smile-less shots can happen regardless of the weather. So, try to emotionally prepare for that

Photo Style/Backgrounds

To enhance the shareability of your summer family photos, aim for a visual language that evokes the warmth and joy of the season. Use natural sunlight, golden-hour glow, or dynamic shadows to create a sense of depth and warmth in your images, and emphasize movement with flowing fabrics or wind-swept hair.

Incorporate the breathtaking landscapes of summer with backgrounds like:

    • Beaches: The beach is a classic location for summer photos, with sandy shores, blue waters, and colorful sunsets. You can use the ocean, beach umbrellas, sand dunes, or lifeguard towers as backdrops.
    • Gardens: Gardens can offer a peaceful and serene background for your summer photos, with lush greenery, colorful flowers, and winding paths. You can use garden benches, fountains, or statues as props.
    • Sunflower fields: Sunflower fields are a unique and stunning location for summer photos, with tall and bright yellow sunflowers as a backdrop. You can use wooden crates, picnic blankets, or sun hats as props.
    • Waterfalls: If you have access to a waterfall or a stream, it can provide a picturesque backdrop for your summer photos, with cascading water and greenery. You can use rocks, logs, or wildflowers as props.

Celebrate the carefree spirit and radiant energy that summer brings and you are sure to appreciate the resulting photos.

Styling for Fall Family Photos

One of the reasons fall is the most popular season to take family photos is that everyone has got to get that annual holiday card out. You typically want to send out holiday cards with recent family photos—cue all the yummy pumpkin patch photos. Photographers are slammed during this time of year, so schedule your session well in advance. Now, let’s get back to the clothes!

Colors/Outfits

Choosing your fall outfit for family photos can begin with an inventory of all the physical features you love about yourself. Do you love your eyes? Find a color that complements them. Have you been hitting the squats hard at the gym and you're ready to show off your backside? Then, heck yes you should wear those flattering jeans. Pair those jeans with a burgundy red chunky knit sweater. *Chef’s kiss.* Get everyone else to fall in line with a brown, cream, and denim color palette for fall.

Think of rich, earthy hues for your fall family photos color palette, embracing shades of burnt orange, deep red, mustard yellow, and chocolate brown. These colors not only complement the natural scenery but also exude the warmth and coziness of the season. Need a few other ideas?

    • Warm earth tones (as mentioned above): Fall is known for its warm and rich colors, and earth tones such as brown, rust, olive green, mustard yellow, and deep red can create a cozy and inviting feel for your photos.
    • Plaids: Plaid patterns are a classic choice for fall, and they can add a rustic and timeless look to your photos. You can choose from different types of plaids, such as buffalo check, tartan, or gingham.
    • Jewel tones: Jewel tones such as emerald green, sapphire blue, and ruby red can add a touch of elegance and sophistication to your fall photos.
    • Sweater patterns: Patterns like cable-knit, fair isle, and argyle create a timeless fall look as well.

Fall family photos are a good time to add dimension through layers as well; blazers, bomber jackets, and vests can elevate your look and his too! Accessorize? Always. Belts, ties, and fun socks for the men and all the gold drip for the women.

Poses

For fall photo poses, have couples cozy up together, wrapped in a warm blanket, or sharing a warm beverage. Capture the joy of children playing in a pile of fallen leaves or exploring a pumpkin patch. Sibling poses can show their bond, sitting back-to-back on hay bales, or walking side-by-side on a leaf-covered path. Pets can also be included, enjoying the crisp air while being hugged or carried by their family members.

Photo Style/Backgrounds

To capture the essence of the fall season, experiment with a visual language that showcases the stunning scenery, golden light, and cozy atmosphere. A few backgrounds that exude fall may include:

    • Forests and Woods: Fall foliage in a forest or wooded area can make a beautiful, natural background for your fall photos. You can use trees, leaves, and fallen logs as props.
    • Farms and Barns: An old barn, rustic fence, or a field of hay bales can make a great background for your fall photos. You can use a tractor or vintage truck as props.
    • Vineyards: Vineyards and wineries can provide a beautiful fall backdrop with grapevines, oak barrels, and rows of vines.
    • Apple Orchards: Apple orchards with rows of trees, red and green apples, and baskets of apples can create a charming and colorful background for your fall photos. You can use apple crates, baskets, or blankets as props.
    • Pumpkin Patches: Pumpkin patches with rows of pumpkins, hay bales, and scarecrows can provide a fun and festive background for your fall photos. You can use pumpkins, gourds, or autumn foliage as props.

Styling for Winter Family Photos

A woman hanging an ornament on a Christmas tree in her home wearing a cream jumpsuit

Much like summer, cold kids aren’t happy kids. Indoor sessions are common during the winter season for good reason. Photos in front of the fireplace in a cozy cabin at your nearest ski lodge aren’t a terrible alternative. The best part is styling doesn’t have to be limited to ultra-warm clothes.

If you just can’t stay away from the beauty of the snow-capped mountains, we understand that, too. Whichever location you decide, here are our top tips for styling winter family photos.

Colors/Outfits

You might be sick of hearing “Let it Go” from Frozen, but now is the time to channel your inner Elsa. Something like that iconic icy blue gown would make a perfect family photo dress outdoors. If you decide to become the ice queen herself and carry on with an outdoor photoshoot, layers aren’t optional like in the fall. They’re a must! We don’t want everyone looking like the Marshmallow Man in their puffer jackets, but keep those on standby in-between shots. Hats and tights can add warmth without the extra bulk.

For your winter color palette there are several options to consider:
Icy Blues and Silver: Cool, icy blues and silver colors can create a wintery and magical feel for your photos. You can choose outfits with silver or metallic accents or use silver ornaments, snowflakes, or tinsel as props.

    • Rich Jewel Tones: Deep and rich jewel tones like emerald green, ruby red, and sapphire blue can add a touch of elegance and luxury to your winter photos.
    • Metallics/Sparkles: Gold, silver, and bronze metallics can add a festive and glamorous feel to your winter photos. You can use sparkly accessories or use metallic ornaments, garlands, or lights as props.
    • Holiday Colors: Red and green are classic holiday colors that can create a cheerful and festive feel for your winter photos. You can use holiday-themed props such as wreaths, stockings, or ornaments to create a holiday-inspired photo.
    • Plaids: Plaid patterns can be a cozy and classic choice for winter photos. You can choose from different types of plaids, such as buffalo check, tartan, or houndstooth.

Poses

A pregnant woman dressed in winter colors and holding her baby bump

For winter poses, capture couples in a tender embrace, sharing warmth and affection with hands entwined or heads resting on each other's shoulders. Children and siblings can be shown building a snowman, having a snowball fight, or simply enjoying the heavenly snowfall. Pets can join in on the fun, wearing cute winter accessories or playing in the snow alongside their family. You may have heard that the biggest faux pax of family photos is to be too matchy-matchy - while that’s true in every other instance, matching holiday pajamas are too cute not to try.

Photo Style/Backgrounds

Embrace the offerings of winter by capturing the enchanting snowfall, twinkling holiday lights, or the warm glow of a fireplace. Don't forget to capture the laughter, joy, and tenderness of your family members, creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime.

    • Snowy landscapes: If you have access to a snowy area, it can provide a beautiful and wintery background for your photos. You can use snow-covered trees, snow banks, or ice-covered lakes as a backdrop.
    • Cozy interiors: A cozy interior with a fireplace, blankets, or hot cocoa can provide a warm and inviting background for your winter photos. You can use holiday decorations, such as a Christmas tree or menorah as a prop.
    • Cityscapes: Urban areas with festive lights, colorful storefronts, or ice-skating rinks can provide a vibrant and lively background for your winter photos.
    • Winter gardens: Gardens with evergreen plants, holly berries, or frosted leaves can provide a natural and festive background for your winter photos. You can use garden benches, snow-covered paths, or winter flowers as props.

While you can’t control the weather, spring cleaning your closet will help you feel in control of your wardrobe—no matter the temperature.

Take charge of your life with these top four spring cleaning tips. See how you can spring clean your way to the closet of your dreams with Called to Surf.

Woman looking to the side wearing a white spring dress holding tulips

1.) Set the Vibes

Are you someone who loves to clean and organize? Maybe you clean places that other people will see (i.e., bathrooms, kitchen, living room), but your closet is a wreck. No one sees it. Then, it ends up on the lowest priority of the “to-clean” list. When you attack spring cleaning, create a positive environment—no matter which type of cleaning personality you have.

Keep your favorite Trader Joe's snack nearby because hangry girls don’t get things done. Dark and gloomy rooms can feel sad. Let some natural light through the windows, if you can. Then, put on your favorite playlist for extra hype.

Listing things you need is next up on your spring cleaning checklist. Boxes or bins will help separate clothes into storage, donation, or repurpose piles. Keep some new hangers and dividers handy, just in case. You’re officially ready to start spring cleaning!

2.) How to Break up With Clothes

Woman’s feet hanging off a chair next to white pumps in a large walk-in closet after spring cleaning

Unlike your last Tinder date, some of your clothes have been with you through thick and thin. The hardest clothes to break up with are sentimental ones. You know which ones we mean. That shirt you wore to your first T Swift concert or the high school hoodie you never wear but wouldn’t dare part with. We all have those clothes that seem impossible to purge.

Our first advice is to try.

The memories live on. Hopefully, you have enough pictures in those clothes that you keep without taking up space in your drawers and closets. If that isn’t an option, consider putting those clothes to work. DIY a quilt from all those tees so they can still comfort you. No sewing skills? Try using those sentimental tees instead of bubble wrap or newspaper to pack away fragile items like Christmas ornaments.

For all other clothes, apply the one-year rule. If you find yourself cycling through your favorite tops and bottoms and there are clothes you haven’t reached for in over a year, it’s time to say your goodbyes. It’s a new year; you’re a new girl. This girl only wears clothes that make her feel like the queen she is.

3.) Find Your Organization System

Colorful spring dresses hanging on a rack as a result of spring cleaning

Store your seasonal items and swap them out when it’s time. That’s one of our best spring cleaning tips. Short on storage space? No problem. Keep out-of-season or special occasion dresses toward the back of the closet or drawers. Make clothes that are in season the most visible and accessible.

One of the most popular ways to organize your closet includes a color-coordinating system. Hang your clothes in a colorful rainbow. You could also hang entire outfits together (tops, pants, and accessories). It’s easier to roll out of bed and get ready for the day with this system. Mondays will thank you!

4.) Keep, Donate, or Repurpose?

After you’ve filtered through everything that gets to stay, the last step to your spring cleaning checklist is figuring out what to do with the rest. Here’s a quick test for clothing donations: If the clothing item is in good condition (no stains, holes, or tears) and is clean, it’s a good candidate for a clothing donation. Some thrift stores even offer money for gently used clothes. Just don’t be offended if they don’t offer you anything for your favorite dresses. You can always donate to a local charity or try to sell it on Depop instead.

For the clothes that aren’t even donation worthy, don’t trash them! Repurpose clothes instead of tossing them. Cut them up, and now you have new rags to finish spring cleaning the rest of your home. Do you have a pup you love and adore? Braid old shirts into chew toys for your furry friend. See if there’s a place near you that recycles textiles before they end up in the trash.

Spring Cleaning Tips with Called to Surf

The best thing about the whole out-with-the-old, in-with-the-new part of spring cleaning is the new! You might get so good at purging your closets that you’re missing some spring-wardrobe essentials. Fill in the gaps with floral dresses, denim shorts, or comfy shoes that you’ll reach for this season. Happy spring cleaning!

Delicate clothes refer to garments made from fragile or sensitive fabrics such as silk, velvet, lace, chiffon, or satin; these fabrics require special care to prevent damage during washing and drying.

How Often to Wash Delicate Clothes?

The frequency of washing delicate clothes depends on how often it's worn and the level of soiling. Generally, it's best to wash delicate clothes after each wear to remove sweat, oils, and other residues that can damage the fabric over time.

How to Handle Delicate Fabric?

Delicate clothes, such as silk, velvet, and lace, require special care to maintain their quality and longevity. Let’s delve into the specific care instructions for each of these delicate fabrics to ensure your pieces stay in prime condition; here's how to properly care for them.

Stunning Silk Statement Pieces

When shopping for modest clothing that will catch attention and capture compliments, silk is an excellent choice. Silk can last for several years in prime condition. Yet this soft and smooth fabric is also sensitive and prone to snagging, tearing, or fading if not treated properly. Caring for silk as an investment will ensure a long lifespan in your closet.

Can You Wash Silk?

Yes, silk can be washed, but it requires special care to avoid damaging the fabric; follow the provided instructions for washing silk to ensure it stays in prime condition.

How To Wash Silk?

  • Place silk in the washing machine with mild detergent and on a “delicates” cycle.
  • Do not put silk in the dryer as rapid tumbling can damage the fabric. Do not wring out the fabric as it can stretch the weave. Instead, place it on a white towel and allow it to dry completely.

Maintenance Tip!

Before washing silk with other modest clothing in your hamper, be sure to dampen a non-noticeable area of the piece with a white cloth or Q-tip to check for bleeding. Silk tends to bleed color, especially the first few times it is washed.

Valued Velvet Details

Velvet is made with two layers. It’s a heavier fabric often associated with cooling weather. This textured and unique cloth creates fascinating visuals on modest dresses or seasonal sweaters, but may very well be the most difficult fabric to maintain in peak condition on the list.

Can You Wash Velvet?

Yes, you can wash velvet, but it requires careful attention to maintain its texture and appearance; follow the steps below to keep your velvet in top shape without fearing laundry day.

How To Wash Velvet?

  • Remove stains and spot-treat blemishes before washing velvet. Dab the area carefully with a soft fabric and tepid water to remove as much as possible before washing. For solid, dried-on stains, take a blunted edge, such as a butter knife, and gently scrape away the residue.
  • For velvet made of synthetic fabric, you can fill a bowl of warm water and swirl the garment slowly with detergent. Gently squeeze to remove excess moisture before allowing it to air dry.
  • For high-quality velvet, it is best to only dry clean it to keep its color and integrity.

Maintenance Tip!

Steam can remove wrinkles and stains in velvet between washes. Give your velvet a longer life between cycles by hanging it on a hanger and placing it in the shower. Thoroughly steaming the modest clothing can also remove lingering odors.

Lush Lace Modest Dresses and Blouses

Lace has been popular for more than 100 years and doesn’t show signs of slowing down. Even today’s trends continue to highlight the delicacy and versatility of lace details in modest dresses and blouses. Though lace is commonly made of cotton or linen, lace is especially fragile because of its wide, open weave. If not taken care of properly, it can disintegrate.

Can You Wash Lace?

Yes, you can wash lace, but it requires gentle care to preserve its delicate nature; that said, here’s how to take care of your lace.

How To Wash a Lace Dress?

It is highly recommended that lace clothing be hand washed.

  • Fill a bowl with cool or warm water and mix in a gentle detergent.
  • Place garments into the bowl and gently swish for a few minutes. Avoid vigorous scrubbing or pulling.
  • Rinse with cool water thoroughly until soap has been removed.
  • Place on a towel to dry. Do not ring out excess water.

Maintenance Tip!

Where possible, avoid ironing lace as it can easily burn or become distorted. If lace in modest clothing does require ironing, first dampen the lace and place a protective barrier such as a thin cotton sheet between the iron and the lace to prevent singeing the material.

What Detergent to Use for Delicate Clothes?

When washing delicate clothes, choose a detergent specifically formulated for delicate fabrics to ensure they receive the proper care.

Regular detergents may contain harsh chemicals that can damage delicate fabrics over time. Instead, look for detergents labeled as gentle, mild, or suitable for hand washing delicate items.

Can You Always Wash Your Clothes on Delicate?

While delicate clothes should ideally be washed on a gentle or delicate cycle, it's essential to read the care label on each garment. Some delicate fabrics may have specific washing instructions, such as hand washing or dry cleaning only.

Can You Put Delicate Clothes in the Dryer?

It's generally not recommended to put delicate clothes in the dryer, as the heat and rapid tumbling can damage the fabric. Instead, it's best to air dry them by laying them flat on a towel or hanging them to dry.

How Do You Wash Delicate Clothes Without a Delicate Cycle?

If you don't have a delicate cycle on your washing machine, you can still wash delicate clothes by using a mesh laundry bag or pillowcase to protect them during the wash. Additionally, opting for a gentle detergent and a cold water setting can help minimize damage.

How Do You Protect Delicate Clothes in the Washing Machine?

To protect delicate clothes in the washing machine, always use a gentle detergent specifically formulated for delicate fabrics. Avoid washing them with rough or abrasive items that could cause snagging or tearing.

How to Wash Delicate Clothes by Hand?

Hand washing delicate clothes is often the best method to ensure they receive gentle treatment. Fill a basin with lukewarm water and a small amount of gentle detergent, then agitate the water to create suds. Submerge the garments and gently swish them around, then rinse thoroughly with clean water and air dry.

Treating Stains on Delicate Clothes

For stains on delicate clothes, it's essential to treat them as soon as possible to prevent them from setting. Use a gentle stain remover or spot treatment specifically formulated for delicate fabrics, and follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.

How to Dry Delicate Clothes

To dry delicate clothes, avoid using a dryer and instead air dry them by laying them flat on a clean towel or hanging them on a drying rack. Avoid wringing out excess water, as this can stretch or damage the fabric.

Tips for Washing Delicate Clothes

Taking care of delicate clothes requires attention to detail and gentle handling to ensure their longevity. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind when washing your delicate garments:

  • Always read the care label on delicate clothing for specific washing instructions.
  • Use a gentle detergent and cold water to minimize damage to delicate fabrics.
  • Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals on delicate clothing, as they can weaken the fibers.
  • Handle delicate clothes with care during washing, drying, and ironing to prevent damage or distortion of the fabric.

Caring for delicate clothes is not only about maintaining their appearance but also about preserving their quality and longevity.

By following the specific care instructions for fabrics like silk, velvet, and lace, and adhering to general guidelines for washing and handling delicate clothing, your pieces will remain in prime condition for years to come.

We can’t help it! Transitioning weather means updating the latest fashion trends, putting away the clothes you’ve been wearing for months, and pulling out familiar favorites from last season.

As satisfying as reacquainting yourself with your wardrobe from a past season may be, sorting and storing your current season’s clothes can be a more significant task than anticipated. While throwing your current clothes in a box and calling it a day may be tempting, mindfully approaching clothing storage will set you up for the best experience in the long run.

These five clothing storage ideas from properly folding clothes to finding the right containers will have you prepared for the new season in no time.

1. Sort! Sort! Sort!

No matter what season you are packing for, without a doubt, the best way to store clothes is to pack only what you love! Sort, sift, and toss judiciously. This method cuts down immediate clutter and means you’ll be happy with every item you pull out when you unpack it again next season.

To help yourself decide what to keep, ask yourself the following questions:

  • When was the last time I wore this?
  • Is this a style I will still like in a few months?
  • Does this item fit me well?
  • Would I be excited to unpack this next season?

2. Select the Right Clothing Storage Containers

Several pairs of shoes ready to go into clothing storage

There are plenty of clothing storage ideas when it comes to selecting a container to pack away clothes. First, evaluate your top priorities to find the right option for you. If, for example, your most critical need is taking up as little space as possible, vacuum bags are the way to go. However, if keeping your wardrobe safe from mice invasions or other pesky pests is essential, plastic bins with secure lids are the best clothing storage option.

3. Folding Clothes the Right Way Is a Must

After sorting through your attire and thoughtfully selecting the right clothing storage containers, the next step is to start packing! Throwing everything into a box haphazardly may save time and energy, but it can also cause damage to garments. The extra time spent carefully prepping and folding clothes is well worth the effort.

Following these quick tips will keep you organized and neat.

  • Stacking clothes according to their fabric type is a smart choice to keep clothes pristine.
  • If handling light fabric like linen, rolling instead of folding clothes will keep them compact and safe, without creating extra creases.
  • Be mindful of buttons, hooks, and sequins that may pull or snag on material stored next to them.
  • When packing swimwear, ensure the fabric is completely dry to avoid mildew.
  • Clean off the bottoms of all shoes before storing them to remove extra dirt. Keep all footwear in a separate bin.

4. Clean and Repair in Advance

When it comes to unpacking clothes as the weather changes, you will want everything to be ready-to-wear out of the box. Save yourself the extra chore down the road by thoroughly cleaning your clothes before packing them away. This is one of the best ways to store clothes because it will keep your wardrobe in better condition and ensure easy unpacking later.

Where required, also be sure to finish any fixes before storing. Fixes include adjusting a hem, sewing a new button, or repairing a rip. If the fix is more than you’re willing to tackle (either now or later), instead sort the item into the trash or donate pile.

5. Pick the Right Location

Once everything is all packed and sorted into storage containers, our top clothing storage idea is to find the optimal location. This will make sure all your hard work pays off. If you’re using smaller containers or vacuum-seal bags, storing them beneath your bed is an excellent choice to conserve space. For those with bigger boxes, high shelves in your closet are a smart place to keep your boxes away from potential pests. Above all, the best way to store clothes after packing them away is to keep them in a cool and dry place to avoid fading or water damage.

You’re Ready to Store Your Clothes!

Though clothing storage may not be your favorite part of the season, properly packing away the prior season’s wardrobe will ensure your clothes stay in the best condition. You can increase their longevity for many seasons to come.

In terms of colors that have caught our eye recently, it’s all cool tones for cold weather: blues, purples, greens, and grays. Think navy, emerald, plum, and a pinch of maroon. Plus, there’s something really elegant about a winter white like ivory.

Capsule wardrobes. You have probably heard of them or seen ideas on Pinterest, but what are they? How do you make one?
We’re here to answer your questions and give you some ideas. With our help, you'll be able to build your best winter capsule wardrobe!

Planning Your Cute Winter Outfits

The first thing we need to establish is what a capsule wardrobe is. A capsule wardrobe is a limited group of clothing that only contains pieces that complement each other. The goal is to be able to mix and match any pieces depending on your mood or the occasion. Capsule wardrobes have become extremely popular in the last several years (especially when you’re on a budget or living in tight quarters!).

You’ll typically see a lot of neutral colors in capsule wardrobes because neutrals are easy to pair together. Plus, neutral colors are perfect for winter! A capsule wardrobe full of neutral comfy staples is a great way to take some stress off picking outfits.

Capsule wardrobes involve a little bit of planning at the beginning, true, but we will break it down into easier sections and show you some ideas for building your capsule wardrobe.

Start Up Top

A woman stands with her hands on her hips

“Simple” is the word to keep in mind while you find tops for your capsule wardrobe. Basic, solid-colored tops will make up most of your wardrobe. You will also want to vary the kinds of shirts you pick. Remember, this is your whole wardrobe, so consider the formality of places you typically go (work, school, home, etc.) and purchase a few dressier or more casual tops depending on your lifestyle.

A woman poses in a black and white striped sweater

If you still want more color or pattern to liven up your look, we recommend a soft pattern that’s easy to match, like this striped sweater.

Simple and Basic Bottoms

A woman poses in a pair of straight-leg jeans

Bottoms are even easier than tops! All you need to do is pick three or four pairs of pants and a skirt in neutral colors to match the tops you picked previously. You can opt for a nicer pair of pants and a staple pair of jeans. Like the tops, you’ll want to consider the events and obligations you typically have to ensure your wardrobe is functional.

A woman poses in a midi olive skirt

If you want to add a pop of pattern to your wardrobe, this skirt is a great way to do so! We recommend keeping the pattern small so it looks more neutral.

Dress It Up

A woman poses in a black dress.

Dresses are crucial to any capsule wardrobe! You can dress them up or down and add variety to your style. We recommend keeping it simple with only one or two boutique winter dresses in solid colors. This winter dress is a great option! Or if you're looking for additional inspiration, check out our citrus dress collection.

Layering

Layering is important in any capsule wardrobe but especially during winter! Not only because it’s cold outside, but because layering is fun! Where are our cozy girlies at? You have so many options for good top layers like jackets, sweaters, and coats. Adding one of each to your capsule wardrobe is the perfect way to round out any cute winter outfit.

A woman poses in a beige jacket

Long jackets like this one are a great option for the weather that winter brings. Adding this long jacket to any outfit will leave you warm and stylish. You can also use outerwear to add color or pattern to a capsule wardrobe. Plaid is a hot trend this winter and would look great in your closet!

Don’t Forget Shoes!

A pair of black leather platform boots

The shoes are last up in the capsule wardrobe. This winter, we are loving simple platform boots that add an edge to outfits. Shoes in a capsule wardrobe don't need to be flashy or attract a lot of attention; they should pair well with all of your pieces and polish off the perfect winter look.

What to Wear to a Fall Wedding

Fall is here, which means beautiful fall weddings are too. Are you wondering what to wear to a fall wedding this year? We’ve got you covered!

Picking the right outfit can be tricky, but with this comprehensive guide, you'll look your best in beautiful fall colors! Read on to see this fall’s hottest wedding trends.

Fall Wedding Basics

So, what exactly should you look for when shopping for a fall wedding outfit—or even just the perfect fall bridesmaid dress? Here are a couple of things to keep in mind:

  • First, consider the weather. Fall weather can be all over the place and hard to predict. You’ll want something with a little more coverage that can keep you warm if temperatures dip lower than expected. Long sleeves or maxi dresses are great options.
  • Color is the other thing to consider! Fall wedding colors are usually deep and rich tones of greens, yellows, and reds or earthy neutrals. Think of the beautiful fall leaves and go from there! Fall colors are a great way to get into the seasonal feeling, and you’ll love how you look in the pictures beside the fall landscape.

Now, for the fun part: actual examples!

 Think Texture

A woman poses in an orange floor-length fall dress

The Elegant Textured Dress is a fun choice because of the—well—texture! The pattern is a raised texture, which adds movement and dimension to the look of the dress. Not only that, but the long length and rusty hue make this the perfect option for a fall wedding. Pair it with flats or heels for a seasonal, well-rounded wedding guest look!

Choose a Bold Length

A woman poses in a dark red floor-length fall dress

The Tennyson Wrap Maxi is another great fall wedding guest dress, and it's formal enough for a black-tie wedding (if that’s what’s on the menu). The long sleeves and floor length make the dress elegant and classy while also keeping you warm in the chilly autumn air. Finally, the burgundy color perfectly complements fall wedding colors.

Flats

A pair of brown leather slip-on flats

A dress isn't the only thing that completes a fall wedding outfit. Pair your dress with statement shoes that will round out the whole look! At Called to Surf, we have a few different shoe options that work well with any fall dress.

Seychelles Survival Leather flats are one great choice! The slip-on feature dresses things down for a more casual look (which is also great if you’re planning on being on your feet all day). However, the leather keeps the look classy and polished!

Booties

A pair of white leather boots are laying on their side

Booties are a classic fall staple. Dress up any look while simultaneously keeping your feet warm with the perfect fall ankle boots. Plus, the white leather of these Chinese Laundry Filip Softy Cow booties keeps them trendy and fun. With booties, you can also customize the look with different heel and platform heights. Ankle boots may just be the most versatile accessory in your wardrobe.

Top 7 Back-To-School Looks You Won't Want to Miss Out on This Year

Summer is officially coming to a close in 2022, and everyone is heading back to school. But back to school doesn’t have to be disappointing with new modest dresses and clothing! We’ve rounded up some of the hottest trends this fall. Continue reading to see what everyone will be wearing this year!

Back-To-School Trends

This year, students are looking for comfy, trendy clothes that will impress. We’ve curated a list of easy styles you can put together and make your own. As a bonus, we have direct links for each item! Shopping for back-to-school finds has never been simpler.

 1. Oversized Sweatshirts

A woman poses in a blue sweatshirt and jeans

The oversized sweatshirt is the hottest fashion trend this fall (and we’re not mad about it). This style is great because you can dress it up for a more professional look or dress it down for a trendy, casual fit. Pair your oversized sweatshirt with straight-leg jeans and platform sneakers, and you have a perfect back-to-school outfit!

2. Bold Blazers

A woman poses in a black and white checkered blazer

A bold blazer can pull a look together. When paired with neutrals, blazers can be a perfect pop of pattern or color to make a statement. Blazers are perfect for projects, presentations, or days when you just want to feel a little more “dressed up.” You can wear your blazer with jeans, leggings, or a pair of slacks. This versatile accessory will be a great addition to your wardrobe.

3. Puff Sleeves

A woman poses in a cute fall outfit with puff sleeves

We can’t get enough of the puff-sleeve trend, and we’re happy to report that they’re still alive and well, especially on dresses! Puff sleeves add a fun yet subtle detail to what would otherwise be a simple dress. They’re a great option if you’re looking for something flirty and fun but still simple and classic. Style this with a bold necklace and a pair of chunky boots for a fall look that will turn heads!

4. Platform Shoes

A pair of black leather platform sandals

We’re loving platform shoes (especially for our short gals)! Whether it’s a classic pair of platform sneakers or a bold pair of platform sandals, platforms are the perfect way to elevate a look! As a bonus, they're still super comfortable. Strut your way down the school hallway in a fun, new pair of shoes this year.

5. Neutral Sweaters

A woman poses in a neutral sweater

Neutrals are always in fashion, but they come to life in the fall. A neutral sweater is a perfect base for your outfit because you can style it in so many ways. Pair it with a puffer vest for when it gets chillier or gold jewelry to make it pop. The possibilities are endless!

6. Graphic Tees

Woman facing away from the camera shows off her graphic tee

Nothing says “cool and casual” like a graphic tee. Graphics can do so much for an outfit without being overwhelming. They keep the outfit light yet playful. Plus, graphic tees double as loungewear. Say goodbye to changing into your comfies immediately after you get home from school; you’re already wearing them!

7. Distressed Jeans

A woman poses in distressed straight-leg jeans

Every closet needs a staple pair of jeans. This year, distressed jeans are the way to go. You can wear distressed jeans with just about anything. Not only are they versatile, but they’re super comfortable too. Distressed jeans can make any outfit look trendy and effortless.

(Hint: Go for a straight-leg or wide-leg fit, and you’ll be a true Gen Z.)

How to Style: Colorful Sandals

We are styling our newest sandal obsession: chunky with pops of color! As we are coming out of the colder season, pops of color are going to bring your wardrobe to life this spring. Our Low-Key Slides have endless outfitting potential and we are going to bring you along!

01/Dressed Up

We are adding a pop of color to our spring dresses this year! Style the low key slide with a floral dress like one of our favorites here. Coordinating colors add a nice finish, whether you are matching a spring floral or making a monochromatic look, keep your color scheme in mind when adding a statement shoe.

02/ Everyday Casual

Give your everyday look a spring refresh with a pop of color. The bright pink of the low key slide is the perfect finishing touch to this white/denim look. We love to pair slides with these billabong wide leg jeans and here is our go-to white button up.

03/ Denim on Denim

One of the best ways to add color to your all denim look is including a statement shoe! This classic denim jumpsuit is great for your spring wardrobe and the low key slides lighten it up and add that perfect pop of spring color!

As it gets warmer outside these midi spring skirts have quickly become one of our favorite clothing items for the season. These versatile pieces effortlessly blend style and comfort, making them a must-have in women's spring clothing wardrobe.

And to achieve a springy look, you need to incorporate light and airy fabrics, pastel colors, floral prints, and flowy silhouettes into your outfit choices. Midi spring skirts are so easy to dress up or down and are so comfortable for those nice spring days, follow along as we show three ways to style skirts this spring!

Splash of Color

This classic button up will be a staple in our spring clothes wardrobe this whole season. It pairs so well with every bottom, especially this tight fit cream spring skirt

Adding a pop of color like these Seychelle slides, will put the spring in your women's spring clothing outfit!

Spring Neutrals

We love wearing neutrals paired with pastels for a soft spring look in our spring clothes wardrobe.

This rose floral skirt provides that soft look, paired with basic tops and neutral bags and our favorite strappy sandals this look will please at any women's spring clothing event

We accessorized with our favorite letter pendant necklace and dainty hoops.

Monochromatic

This black and white look is a fun way to mix up your spring skirt looks.

We are loving the platform converse this year and have been pairing them with almost everything, they are a good staple to keep in your closet.

This is one of our most popular midi skirts paired with a classic collared top and black and white accessories to pull the outfit together!

How to Style a Flare Skirt

Style a flare skirt by balancing its voluminous silhouette with fitted tops or tucked-in blouses.

For a chic and elongated look, pair it with heels or wedges. Accessorize minimally to let the skirt steal the spotlight and opt for complementary colors or patterns in your outfit.

Consider adding a belt to define your waist and create a flattering silhouette.

How to Wear a Floral Midi Skirt

Wear a floral midi skirt by pairing it with simple tops in solid colors to let the skirt stand out.

Add feminine touches like delicate jewelry and strappy sandals to enhance the romantic appeal of the floral print. Consider layering with a denim jacket or lightweight cardigan for cooler spring days.

Experiment with different lengths and styles of floral skirts to find the perfect match for your body type and personal style.

How to Wear a Black Skirt in the Spring

In the summer, style a black skirt with lightweight and breathable tops in bright colors or bold patterns to create contrast.

Opt for airy fabrics like cotton or linen to stay cool. Pair the skirt with sandals or sneakers for a casual look, or dress it up with wedges or heels for evening outings.

Add statement accessories like oversized sunglasses or a straw hat to elevate your women's spring clothing look.

What Tops Go with Black Spring Skirts

Various tops can complement black spring skirts, depending on the occasion and personal style.

For a casual look, pair a black skirt with a tucked-in graphic tee or a slouchy sweater. For a more polished ensemble, opt for a fitted blouse, a structured blazer, or a button-up shirt.

Experiment with different textures, colors, and patterns to create versatile and chic outfits. Consider adding statement jewelry or a bold scarf to elevate your black skirt outfit for special occasions or evening events.

Additional Tips for Styling Spring Skirts

  • Play with textures: Mix and match different fabrics like chiffon, denim, or linen to add depth and interest to your spring skirt outfits.
  • Layer strategically: Add lightweight layers such as cardigans, kimonos, or vests to create dimension and versatility in your spring looks.
  • Experiment with accessories: Elevate your spring skirt outfits with statement jewelry, scarves, hats, or belts to add personality and flair.
  • Consider the occasion: Tailor your spring skirt outfits to suit the occasion, whether it's a casual day out, a brunch with friends, or a special event. Choose appropriate footwear and accessories to complement the vibe of the occasion.
  • Embrace versatility: Invest in versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits with your spring midi skirts or spring maxi skirts. Choose classic colors and timeless silhouettes that can be styled in various ways for different occasions.
  • Have fun with prints: Don't be afraid to experiment with different prints and patterns, from florals and stripes to polka dots and geometric designs. Mix and match prints for a playful and eclectic spring look.

By incorporating these tips and styling ideas into your spring wardrobe, you'll be ready to rock your spring skirts with confidence!
